Olympic TKD Sparring

August 5th, 2008 Posted in Blog Post | No Comments »

The video above is from the Gold medal round in Athens 2004, 80kg division (heavyweight). I thinking about taking this up. I’ll never reach this level but it would be fun to go for broke against others my age and weight. Olympic sparring has the following general rules:

  • No punches to the head or face
  • Kicks to the head & face are awarded 2 pts
  • Kicks & punches to the trunk are awarded 1 pt
  • No grabbing or throwing your opponent
  • No attacking your opponent when he’s down

The rules are modified based upon the division you participate in. Here’s the thing, light touches (except those to the face & head) are generally not scored. You have to make a “thunderous strike”, in other words, unload on your opponent and make him feel it. You have to visibly move the person. This is why you won’t see a lot of punches. It’s hard to move someone with a punch to the body, with kicks it’s another story. Punches to the head are ruled out because it’s an easy target. Anyone can snap someone’s head back with a punch.

I don’t know if I’m in shape for this or not but my instructor has struck a deal with another instructor for some of us to train at another facility. There’s a tournament in October that I might participate in down in NYC but that still remains to be seen. I’ll keep you posted. Who knows, the next TKD video you see here might be of me getting knocked out!

Simple Recording Setup

August 5th, 2008 Posted in Podcast | 5 Comments »

This is the first of 3 presentations I did at the Geeks & God Web 2.0 Conference last month. I hope you enjoy it.

The funny comment is from Scott Roche, author of Archangel: Valley of the Shadow. The promo at the end is for Stan Prolongo, short stories about a private detective from the white sands of the Goshen Ocean.

Audio from the conference was recorded by Micah Webner.

Video by ConnectedGeek is available at: http://connectedgeek.net/content/node/2. I think I’m in just about all of them but this presentation is probably in #4 or #5 for July 24th.

My notes from the presentation: Simple Recording Setup

Starry Eyed

July 29th, 2008 Posted in Interview, Podcast | 3 Comments »

Jay Ryan and MeToday’s podcast features an interview I did with Jay Ryan, live, as I passed through Cleveland on my way home from the Geeks & God Web 2.0 Conference. We talked about upcoming events in the night sky as well as his astronomy curriculum: Signs & Seasons. I also talk a little bit about the conference and the ensuing aftermath. And, some congratulations are in order for the Two Blind Squirrels podcast.

On the “EVE” of Commercial Spaceflight

July 29th, 2008 Posted in Blog Post | No Comments »

EVEVirgin Galactic has unveiled the White Knight 2 , aka “EVE”, which will ferry Space Ship 2 and it’s wealthy clientele looking for the thrill if space flight. Believe me when I say that if I had the ducats I would be all over this like a corn dog on a stick. The thrill of flying out of our atmosphere and seeing the earth curve below me is one I hope to eventually experience in my lifetime,

Christened “EVE” in honor of Sir Richard’s mother, who performed the official naming ceremony, WK2 is both visually remarkable and represents ground-breaking aerospace technology. It is the world’s largest all carbon composite aircraft and many of its component parts have been built using composite materials for the very first time. At 140 ft, the wing spar is the longest single carbon composite aviation component ever manufactured.

How about you? Would you take a flight into space if it were offered to you free of charge? Let’s say Richard Branson knocked on your door and said, “Hey, someone bailed out on us and we need to fill a seat. It’s your if you want it,” would you squeak with glee as I would?

You can get more information about “EVE” at Virgin Galactic’s website as well as the press release and photos.

Sam, webservant, shot some video Wednesday night when we went to dinner. This is totally silly but it was fun.
